English Language Learning (ELL)

Hi all!

In addition to being our Director of Family Ministries, I also run our ELL program here at North Liberty United Methodist Church, where we offer English classes for French and Spanish Speakers. This year we have 25 people in our adult classes, and 20 children each week. We offer tutoring and homework help for the school age children, who often fall behind in school due to the the language barrier. We also have at least 10 children in our nursery rooms each week.

We are seeking your help as volunteers for this Spring.

We are in special need of:

Tutors for children.  We have a growing program for elementary-aged children that focuses on reading and homework help.  Our lead teacher will plan the activities and materials; all you have to do is come willing to help!

Nursery Workers: We have several young children who need someone to care and play with them while their parents are in the English classes. We have two nursery rooms: infant/toddler and preschool age.

Drivers: We are looking for adults who are capable of driving our church 15 passenger van to pick up ELL families in the North Liberty area. This is a 30 minute route. Volunteers can choose to drive the early shift (5:45-615pm) or late (8-8:30pm) or both.

The classes this year will be on Monday nights on January 25- April 18.  Class will be from 6:30p to 8:00p.

Service hours can be given.

I have created a Sign up Genius for you to sign up with. Our program is not possible without volunteers, and we hope that you prayerfully consider joining us for at least one night this Spring.

Yours In Christ,
Beth Botsford

New Adult Class

Join a new class that started on Sunday, January 17 from 9:00 – 9:45 am.

We will meet in Pastor Alecia’s office.

Have you ever wondered about Heaven?

Is it for real?  How do we know?

What do I need to do to get there?

Am I good enough?

We hope to be able to answer these questions and more in a seven week class.   We will have an outline of topics, questions and scripture references, but no book.  Along with Pastor Alecia’s sermon series, we hope to find our individual life-changing paths to better understanding of Bible promises about Eternal Life.

Peggy Jedlicka will be facilitator of this class.

The book, “Preparing for Transitions in Life” is available for purchase at $5 per copy.  The book is also available outside the church office for $5 as well.

Having A Mary Hearth in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver

Is your New Year’s “resolution” to develop a closer relationship with God?

Join us as we fellowship with other Christian women on this journey.

We will meet weekly on Tuesday nights starting

January 12 at 7:30 pm to 8:30-9ish.

The book we will use is: Having A Mary Hearth in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver.

“The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet…but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him…yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.

Then comes Jesus, right into the midst of your busy Mary/Martha life-and he extends the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters of Bethany. Tenderly he invites you to choose “the better part”-a joyful life of “living-room” intimacy with him that flows naturally into “kitchen service” for him.

How can you make that choice? With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story and its creative, practical strategies, Joanna shows how all of us-Mary’s and Martha’s alike-can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.”

Let me know if you would like me to order a book for you ($8.50) by email on or before Tuesday, January 5 at janddgryp@southslope.net.

Join us and invite a friend or anyone you think might be interested.
