News From Pastor Alecia’s Study

Remember Who We Are

We begin our fall looking at the very personal letters from St. Paul to Timothy. There is a great of wisdom to be gleaned from the ancient text, which is relevant to our current situations. This series delves into the core of our mission here at First United Methodist Church. If you are able, take time to read through the letters before we start the series!

We were privileged to celebrate the sacrament of holy baptism twice this month. On August 23, Maeven Egly was baptized. Her parents are Jess and Jason. Maeven has two older siblings, Ronan and Mia. Pastor Josh baptized Drake Smith the following Sunday. His parents are Kevin and Sara. His older sister is Zoey.

Expansion Update

If you did not receive an Expansion update in the brown envelope during the first week of September, please let the church office know. We want to make sure the congregation is informed in each step of the process.

District Superintendent Installation

Mark your calendars for September 27, if you would like to attend the installation of Rev. Kiboko Kiboko as our new District Superintendent. More details will be forth coming as they are made available.

Charge Conference

The date for our Charge Conference is Tuesday, October 15. The location will be at New Horizons United Methodist Church. All are welcome to attend our yearly meeting. The Rev. Dr. Jill Sanders will be presiding over the time.

We will wind up our series of Confirmation this month. Throughout the summer we have explored the fundamentals of our faith. Understanding and being able to name our core beliefs is part of our pathway to deeper discipleship. As we seek to become more Christ-like, let’s finish this series strong as we wrestle with the critical issues.

All are invited to attend an outdoor service on Sunday, August 9 at 11:15. Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation in this service. If you would like to be baptized or remember your
baptism by immersion in the pool, please contact Pastor Alecia. This is a service everyone from any service is welcome to attend. A meal is following the service, with beef tenderloin or chicken breast as the meat. Tableware and beverages will be provided. If you would like to bring a side dish, you are welcome. Bring your swimsuit if you would like to join in the fun after lunch. Please RSVP by calling the church office and let us know how many in your household will be attending. The 8:00 and 9:45 services will be held at the church as normal. The outdoor service will be held at the home of Dan and Rhonda Bernacki, 2198 Hendershot Rd. NE in North Liberty. If you would like to carpool, be in the south parking lot at 11:00 am on Sunday, August 9.

While we are out of time to begin construction this summer, we are continuing to work towards that day. A 2015 build simply is not possible; however, we are continuing to work with the architects, the engineers, the city of North Liberty and our financial commitments. Watch for more details.

I BELIEVE: Confirmation Series in Worship

We are continuing with our summer series, Confirmation, in July.
Engaging in the spiritual foundation and practices of our faith is part
of the journey that we began at our baptism. The summer focus is
designed to move us into a deeper understanding of our faith life and
our baptismal vows. It is difficult to live out the Christian life without
wrestling with our foundation. Explore of who you are, the purpose
for which we are called and to whom we belong.

Join us on Thursday, July 23 at 7:00 pm at the church for a congregational
meeting. Glenn Siders, our Building Expansion Chair, will update
us on what is happening behind the scenes. In addition, we will
look at the numbers: cash on hand, amount pledged and what is
needed to start a build this summer. Plan on making this meeting a

VBS is one of the most important ministries of the church. It begins
on July 19. Please start praying now. Pray for the children that they
might experience God. Pray for the youth and adults that are ministering
to these children. Pray for the work of the Holy Spirit in the
lives of the families. This is a powerful week. If you would like to volunteer
or provide a scholarship for families without enough financial
resources, please contact the church office.

Due to scheduling conflicts on Mondays in July, Bucket List Coffee isnot going to meet on Mondays in July. We will resume meeting in theLibrary on August 3.

We will spend the summer looking at aspects of understanding
our faith. The summer series will help us connect
the framework of our faith with our everyday lives. How do
we affirm a faith we do not understand? We have a rich heritage
that challenges us to live out our mission and purpose
as individuals and as a church body.

June 14 Creation John 15: 1-9
June 21 Sin/Redemption John 21: 15-20

News From Pastor Alecia’s Study…….

With the exception of May 3, we will continue the sermon series on the Holy Spirit.

Often called the “forgotten God” of the Trinity, we are winding up a six week series becoming better acquainted. As we open more of ourselves up to the power of the Spirit, our ministries are moving forward. The May schedule is as follows:

May 3            Why Didn’t God Answer This Prayer? Psalm 22:2, John 17:15-24

May 10          Baptized                                                 Romans 6:1-4, 8:1-2

May 17          God’s Will for my Life                              Acts 16:5-10

May 24          Heroes

May 31          Pentecost                                               Acts 2:1-4

The scripture is listed in case you would like to read ahead.

In light of the recent death of Austin Schroeder, we will deal with the topic of God and Suffering at the 8:00 and 9:45 am services on May 3. The question as to Why Didn’t God Answer this Prayer has come up multiple times in the past days. Let’s wrestle with this question on Sunday.

Yes, it will be on May 3! Join us on Sunday May 3 to hear the Kayros Band at the 9:45 and 11:15 services. Pastor Edgar Solis will preach at the 11:15 service. There will be a church potluck beginning at 12:30 pm. All are welcome!

Child hands at prayer

I can’t imagine a better place than this church. When the church lives into its mission, the Spirit of God moves powerfully. On Tuesday night, April 28, we hosted a Time of Reflection in remembering 15 year old Austin Schroeder. I love being in a church than can make events happen in a timely manner. We had 100 people attend the open-ended night, almost all young people. I am grateful for an amazing staff and volunteers that changed their schedules in order to make this happen: Mandy Moellering, Josh Rath, Bev Byram-Howe, Creation Kids afternoon staff, Sharon Ingle, Dale Ingle, Lucy Hershberger and Paul Meade. We saw the Spirit of God work in the lives of young people. It was a powerful night.

Is That You?

Join us on Sunday April 19th as Rev. Dr. Alicia Williams continues her discussion on the Holy Spirit.

The Bible Verse is; John 16: 12 – 14 (NLT)

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.

The Forgotten God – El Dios olvidada

The Holy Spirit is often the neglected in the Trinity. It is impossible for us to life the Christian life apart from the presence of God. We readily speak of God, as well as we can clearly name the stories of Jesus. The presence of God is “WITH US and IN us.” Come worship with us in February as we learn and experience more of who the Spirit is.

At the end of the month, we begin our Lenten series of Forty Days With Jesus. Come and see what the Lord is doing in our midst.
