Youth Ministry Wrap Party
Instead of a traditional Christmas party, we have found a way for our students to give back to our church and community. We will have free Christmas present wrapping on Sunday, December 20 from 5:00—8:00 pm for all church members interested! We’ll offer cookies, hot cider and cocoa. Come and spend some time in fellowship with our students as they serve you in a very practical way.

The youth spent the month of November on a three week study on the importance of God’s word. At the end of the study, they were given a 21 Day Bible Challenge, where they spend a few minutes everyday in the book of John in order to develop a steady habit of reading their bibles daily. This wouldn’t have been possible without all of your support in providing bibles to our students. We are already seeing God at work in their lives:

“Thanks for introducing the Bible challenge at EPIC. My seventh grader and I are really enjoying doing this together. We are using the same Bible so we can both mark passages and verses that we want to talk about or discuss with each other. We’ve had some great conversations- thanks for encouraging our kids to get into their Bibles!” ~ EPIC Parent

Children’s Ministry Christmas Program
Our Children’s Ministry Christmas Program will take place at 9:00 am on Sunday, December 20. We ask that each child participating be present at Sunday school November 29- December 13 to learn the songs. There will be a mandatory rehearsal on Saturday, December 19 at 10am. We are really looking forward to it this year, and are even inviting all of our Creation Kids families! Be sure to pick up a super awesome Advent TREE at church on Sunday morning if you haven’t gotten yours yet

Birthday Party for Jesus
Our Christmas Eve services this year are at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 11:00 pm. At 6:00 pm we are holding a come and go birthday party for Jesus. Stop by the Christmas tree in the church lobby for birthday cake! While there, we are asking each family to bring a brand new book or two, as a Christmas present for Jesus. This year, the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church has a goal of collecting one million books in a new initiative called “Change a Child’s Story”. In 2012, roughly 1 in 4 IOWA 4th graders scored below proficient level on the state reading test. Additional research indicates that a quarter of the kids who are behind in reading by the 4th grade will eventually drop out of school. Together, we can change their story! Help us collect books and provide them to children who need it most!

Family Ministries

Our family ministries are having an excellent school year so far. Within Children’s ministry, our nursery has begun teaching a curriculum aimed just for toddlers and little ones. Ministry to our youngest ones should not simply be childcare, it should be a launching pad for nurturing the infants and toddlers into an integral beginning—a place of prayer where young children hear the foundation Bible stories, learn simple truth statements, in a way catered to them.

Peacemakers went on an exciting adventure to the Colony Pumpkin Patch in October under the amazing leadership of Constance Wagner. Each month we are having more students come to Peacemakers as they hear their friends talk about all they fun they have had.

We are also seeing this trend at EPIC, where we are seeing our students bring more friends each week as they dive mote into the Bible than ever before! At every EPIC meeting we have over 30 students bringing their Bibles and highlighters, volunteering to read, and answering some hard questions that help them discover and own their faith. We’ve also had a lot of fun! Each week we kick off EPIC with food and high-energy games like gaga ball, twinkie football, and dodge ball.

Please take the time this week to pray for our family ministries, as we begin to put a stronger emphasis on serving families. We recognize that parents are ultimately responsible for the spiritual guidance of their children, and we would like to support that effort and help maximize parents influence in their lives.

This is an exciting time to be part of family ministry, and we could not do it without all of our wonderful volunteers.

Children and Youth

What an incredible summer we have had in Children and Youth Ministry. From our Mission trip to Hannibal, Missouri—to Vacation Bible School and our Everest Expedition—it’s been a time of growth and fun as we celebrate our relationship with Jesus!

The Hannibal, Missouri Mission Trip offered us a chance to serve others as Christ’s hands and feet as we worked to “Re-frame” our relationship with God. The eight members of the Youth team experienced the joy and hard work of some pretty amazing home re-construction, as well as the chance to check out the sights of Hannibal. We have tons of awesome pictures that were sent to us by the Group Workcamps team, we will post the link on our Facebook page—check them out!

Thanks again to Lucy Hershberger and Mark Benton for spending a week of their summer serving with our youth! #GodSquad

God has the Power to PROVIDE, COMFORT, HEAL and LOVE FOREVER! It was an excellent Everest adventure at our VBS in July! We hosted over 200 kids, who wanted to learn more about God’s love through songs, games, Bible stories, crafts, snacks and activities. We are so grateful for the over 150 volunteers that helped make this week possible! From providing food for our family meals and snacks, to serving as crew leaders or station guides. Thank you everyone for your help with this tremendous ministry.

On August 23 we celebrated a “Blessing of the Backpacks” as we got ready to go Back to School. It was great to see so many kids with their backpacks, and we handed out over 100 Backpack blessing cards. We also provided Parent, Teacher and Kid Prayers to help give us ideas on ways to incorporate our prayer life in the school year. Our church community will continue to pray for all of our students of every age as they head back to school this fall. Thanks for sharing in worship with us.

Check out the dates below for Fall Kick Off dates. We have Sunday School Registrations available outside the office, or on-line. We are also still in need of a few Sunday School teachers for Pre-K music, it’s a small time commitment and great for someone who wants to get a start in Children’s Ministry! We also need teachers for our 10:00 am multi age classrooms. Please contact Beth at 626-2762 if you are interested in helping out.

Sunday School starts September 13.  Pre-K to 6th grade

8:45 – 9:40 am and 10:00 classes

EPIC starts September 13. 7th to 12th grades

6:00-8:00 pm Sunday Evenings

PEACEMAKERS starts September 18. 4th -6th grades.

Have a blessed fall everyone!

Time Well Spent

Thank you to everyone for all of the gifts, well wishes and prayers for our family as we move to Mount Vernon. This has been an incredible two years of growth, faith and love for me and I am so incredibly blessed to have shared them with the amazing kids and families of our church. I look forward to joining you all again as a volunteer. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement of the Children and Youth Ministry programs. Today and everyday – we choose JOY!

Many Blessings- Mandy Moellering
