January marked the continuance of a journey toward a new beginning for nine youth. Their journey began with baptism. “Baptism is a sacrament in which, “God uses common elements – in this case, water – as means or vehicles of divine grace. Baptism is administered by the church as the Body of Christ. It is the act of God through the grace of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.” UMC.org This step is usually, but not always, accomplished in childhood. At that time, the parents make the covenant with the church body for the child.
The second step is Confirmation. This portion of the journey generally happens at the beginning of adolescence but may occur at any time through adulthood. The nine confirmation candidates have spent approximately eleven weeks learning about the beliefs of the United Methodist Church. The candidates have written Statements of Faith. These will be shared with the congregation after Confirmation Sunday. The youth have made the decision to confirm their Faith through Confirmation. During this ceremony, the candidates will remember their Baptism, profess their Faith and become members of the church body. Confirmation Sunday will take place on April 12 at the 9:45 am service. Join the church body as we celebrate with our youth as they take part in Confirmation.

The Confirmation retreat at Pictured Rocks was an awesome opportunity for the youth to get to know each other better while preparing for the upcoming sacrament of Confirmation. Youth and adults enjoyed Zip-Lining, cooking marshmallows, sledding in the snow and playing fun games (Name that Gargle was an especially big hit.)
During the retreat the youth and mentors had time to work through some of the confirmation sessions, share in a prayer service on Saturday night and Worship with Communion together on Sunday morning. Sleep was in short supply over the weekend. Everyone really enjoyed the event and looks forward to sharing Pictured Rocks with the whole Youth group in the future.

THANK YOU to Pastor Alecia, and Confirmation Team members for coordinating this retreat. THANK YOU to Elaine Hernandez and Jon Maakestad, confirmation mentors that were able to join the youth and adults attending the retreat.
Confirmation is under way for 9 youth and their mentors. Each week they dig further into their faith journey and our Christian beliefs. We are looking forward to a Confirmation Retreat at Pictured Rocks in Monticello in March. Who doesn’t love rock climbing, faith trails and lots of fun games?? Can’t wait!
EPIC high school youth have started a new curriculum series called Life Choices—Trusting God in Life’s Decisions and Challenges. We are seeing some great discussion happening about the issues that impact our daily lives and our faith. The Youth are also actively designing the new Youth space for the Building Expansion. Slides and Hammocks are so far highest on their “want” list. The Youth Team’s list includes couches for discussion spaces, chairs and tables for projects and maybe a new Foosball table. We are thrilled to be able to open the new Youth Space up during the week which I believe will really impact our teen ministry.
Another big event coming up in 2015 is our High School Mission Trip to Hannibal, MO. July 5—11. We will be serving the people of Hannibal in need of home repair and construction. We are still looking for one adult male to join our team. Feeling that God “nudge” to get out and do something new?
Please consider joining us—it is a great opportunity to serve others and share in outreach with our kids.
